Today is the day when women in the United States catchup to the salaries earned by men in the United States last year. Based on census data the National Committee on Pay Equity calculates that women earn 78 cents for every dollar earned by men. In Utah the pay differential is even worse at 69 cents on the dollar, according to the Institute For Women’s Policy Research. In a world where men and women enjoy equal opportunity we should not see such a sizeable pay gap. As a woman who has worked in the private and public sectors I have personally experienced this pay gap and I know the challenges women face when negotiating pay and benefits. It is time for a leader in Salt Lake City who can speak to these issues in the first person. In the entire history of our city we’ve had a single female mayor. It is time for a proven female leader to lead again in the most progressive city in our state. We need a cultural shift on behalf of women and I want to bring that to our city and our state.
